Readers Question:
I am Relocating, Do I find a job first or a home first?
I’m trying to relocate from the Chicago (IL) area to the Dallas/Fort Worth (TX) area. It seems like no one will consider me for a job in the area until I have a local address, but no one will give me a place to live (i.e., an apartment) in the area unless I have a local job. It’s like a “chicken and the egg” scenario!
My boyfriend lives in the area and has agreed to let me use his address and phone number on job applications, but I am hesitant to do that because if I get contacted for an interview, I will not be able to make it to one on short notice because I’m still in Chicago living in my old home and working my old job. I’m hesitant to leave my job and move until I find a new job because of financial concerns and especially because of medical insurance concerns (I have a chronic illness – not cheap!)
So, anyone who has relocated cross-country before – how do you do it? Do you find a job first or a home first?
Readers Best Answer:
** Job first **
unless you have money to rely on in the mean time.
We used to live on the east coast and then I was about 21 (When I was young and foolish) I decided I wanted to live in CA – I moved out there without any job lined up. We had an appt already because I talked with the manager of the complex and gave them references from my then current landlord. I gave them first last and security upfront. Then when I got there – I pounded the pavement for the job.
So it *could* work if you went first and then got the job later.
But like I said – you have to have enough money to pay your bills and put down on the appt for a few months!! not just a few pennies in the bank.
PLUS – make sure you are going there because you want to. Not just to follow a boyfriend there. Cause think about it… what if it doesn’t work out.. is this a place you still want to make your home – if it is I would go for it… but if you think you will be high tale’n it back to Chicago if you break up… this may not be the best idea.
